So it looks like I’m going to pickup a few boxes of Shadowmoor to share with my casual new media play group. The local wholesale guys is selling for $84 + shipping, but star city games is selling for $79 + shipping. That $8 extra bucks could get me two more booster packs at the local shop, or new sleeves for my new decks. Sorry local guy.
First Highlander Deck April 28, 2008

The Arcane Order is running an Elder Dragon Highlander format on Tuesday this week. My general Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir. I’m basically doing blue/red control and burn. I’ve never made a highlander deck before so I’m not sure how it will play with only one of everything. My natural instinct was to play black/blue but I decided it might be faster and more fun to run red. Plus I stripped out a blue/red stuffy doll as the core. We’ll see how this plays out. So far the other known generals are:
- Brion Stoutarm
- Teneb, the Harvester
- Garza Zol, Plague Queen
- Phage the Untouchable
- Zur the Enchanter
- Gaddock Teeg
Here is a link to the rules we are going to follow.
UPDATE:
So I just reread the rules and you can only play the color mana of the color of your general. Looks like I’m playing straight blue. Where did I put my blue dragons…

I just received an email from wizards about Shadowmoor release parties. I’m doubly pumped about this because I wasn’t able to make the prerelease events. I’ll be at CCG’s at 1 pm Saturday. And just look at that sexy promo card.
Here is the link to the magic official release page. (If that link doesn’t work after a few weeks it looks like a page that goes up and down on their site)
I’ll also be splitting a box of Shadowmoor with a friend. Can’t wait to get my hands on some fresh packs. I’m hoping we’ll rochester draft a few packs to boot!
Wizards Play Network April 25, 2008

More info today on the recently announced Wizards Play Network. A question and answer article by Brian David Marshal on magicthegathering.com, full article here.
There a little more discussion about the program. Over all it is a boring article that looks as though it was scripted by a PR agent rather than a casual conversation summery.
One bit of info to note is that there will be more emphasized support on casual or group play. As long as there is an organizer regular groups and clubs can receive official support. This is something that has been an issue for The Arcane Order at AiP. The way it seems we won’t need a judge to run our events and we have been meeting weekly for about a year.
Anyway check out the article and I’ll keep you posted as news develops.
Pittsburgh Comicon April 25, 2008

This weekend I’ll be working a booth at the Pittsburgh Comicon. It isn’t a magic booth but a work related boot, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I’ll still be running around checking the premier magic booths and reporting back.
If you are going to be at the PGH Comicon, comment below and lets meet up.
UPDATE
So the Comicon really sucked for magic. There was only one vendor with some booster packs and one secret binder of Ice Age area rares. I was really disappointed about that. Everyone was up for the comic book artists and deals. Maybe next year will be better. One highlight was I met some great guys who own a shop in New Jersey. They don’t have a website yet but I’ll post a link when they get it up.

I wanted to mention some news Wizards of the Coast announced this week. As I think it pertains especially to casual players of Magic: The Gathering.
Check the full story here.
Basically what I understand is that Wizards is working on a way to support players who are a bit more casual as well as give shop owners more flexibility in sanctioned events. I think this ultimately will be a good thing since it will create more opportunities for players to play especially if they can’t always make an FNM or competitive event. Obviously this is a very new initiative and has yet to be fully implemented. I’ll post more as I know more.

This is where everything we’ve covered so far starts to come together. This video focuses on the combat phase of a turn and creatures you use to attack and block. The important part of your creatures to understand is the power/toughness numbers on the bottom right of the card. Power is the number of damage points your creature can deal, first number. Thoughness is the amount of damage it can take before going to the graveyard, second number. The cool thing about power and toughness is that those numbers can easily change. Maybe you want to make your creatures bigger and/or reduce your opponents guys.
The video does a good job of covering attacking and blocking.
Keep in mind you can play instants during combat, better known as combat tricks. Say your guy is smaller than your opponents creature but you are holding a giant growth. Attack with your guy, your opponent blocks, then declare, after blockers are assigned, “I play giant growth.” Making your creature bigger and badder.
I read a good article on magicthegathering.com when I started playing about combat tricks and attacking/blocking. Link here.
One last aspect of the game I want to mention is Zones. Magicthegathering.com has a good Back to Basics section and here is a link to part one that covers game zones (scroll to the bottom). Game zones in a nutshell are different areas of the game where your cards reside. This is a conceptual place than an actual physical place on the table. It is pretty self explanatory except for the stack. The Stack can get complicated so don’t over think it right away.
Next I’ll be back with my final post in this series. Learn to play Magic: The Gathering Part 6.

I hope everyone who went had a great time at the prerelease this weekend. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it due to a speaking commitment in Washington, DC.
Here is a link the visual spoiler on Magic: The Gathering.com. I’m not sure if this is the complete card list but it looks like it.
My first reaction is that there are much fewer untap abilities that I expected. I’ll come back with more thoughts on Shadowmoor later. Enjoy for now.

Is anyone getting concerned that Shadowmoor is getting to big? Maybe it is just me, and don’t get me wrong I am really pumped for a lot of these cards, but I’m a little worried things are going to be very serious in constructed. For a casual player like myself I really enjoy playing FNM but I don’t have the time and energy to always make the most competitive decks. Doing the research, getting the cards, and play testing take time that I don’t always have. I certainly wish I did. People at my local card shop know that sometimes I just phase out. Life gets busy and I have to deal.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that the last time I played a FNM the best decks were very tight and consistent. I know that people spent a lot of time or money gathering all their cards. I’m just worried that the gap might grow larger with all the new power in Shadowmoor. I’ll just have to draft more and really focus on one constructed deck.
Anyway not to take up all you time with that little sidetrack. Here is the next round of stuff. Pretty cool. Original preview article here.

MTG Salvation probably has the best unofficial Shadowmoor Spoiler list out there, with 287 of 301 cards listed (at the time of this post). Click here for their page.
If you are looking for other Magic resources they have a lot. Including podcasts, forums, blogs, wiki, chat. A little too much for me to get completely caught up in, but I do browse their sight once in a while.
