Shards of Alara Land Spoilers September 11, 2008

We get our first peak at uncommon land today and at first I wasn’t sure what to think about this cycle. My first thought was that these will be as important as the Ravnica dual lands that also come into play tapped. At least you don’t have to return another land to your hand in the process. Arcane Sanctum is as dynamic as a Murmuring Bosk with out the pain. It is really a dynamic land, it just comes into play tapped. I can dig it.

One thing I’m wondering about mana these days is why is Wizards making it so easy to play so many colors? Yes the obvious answer is because they are printing cards with crazy mana requirements. But honestly if you bring these lands into a 10th edition environment or something older than the Lorwyn Shadowmoor Block playing three colors isn’t something usually done. I guess my real question is, is mana base becoming irrelevant?  If you have the cards it isn’t a problem to play a consistent 5 color mana base.

Now while I think Arcane Sanctum is an extremely dynamic uncommon lets look at Naya Panorama. This land gives you one colorless but it’s second ability is a handicapped Terramorphic Expanse. Granted Terramorphic Expanse didn’t produce any actual mana but it did allow you to find exactly what you need. Naya Panorama I think isn’t going to be that relevent because if you are going to be searching for a specific land (other than late game) you are probably going to need that mana now and your not going to want to put that one into Naya Panorama to search for a land you can’t even use the same turn.

I’m excited to see what the rare land will look like in this block. Hopefully it is something creative and useful. As alway I expect the rare land to be in the $10 range as soon as it is opened.

What other land thoughts are out there? Do you think we’ll see any mythic rare land?

Maro said that there weren’t going to be any mythic utility cards and he pointed to dual lands as a specific example of what wouldn’t be a mythic. There may be other lands that are mythic(things like Tolarian Academy, Urborg, Volrath’s Stronghold, etc..) but duals won’t be.

Also, in the article that previewed these lands, it was specifically stated that Shards has no rare land.

I really wish the Panoramas didn’t have the word basic on them. That’s the difference between a junk common and a $3-$5 common.

I don’t like these; they are undercosted in comparison with the CIP-tapped dual lands like Coastal Tower. They have exactly the same drawback, but they have more freedom. It’s unbalanced and makes the older cards obsolete.

I really hope that Alara has some mana-denial that the triple-lands are more susceptible to. That would be the only way to make things balanced at this point, imho.

Apparently no rare lands in this set . . . so says Jacob Van Lunen.

I don’t really like this land cards… I prefer Terramorphix Expanse or the fetch-lands rather than Panoramas… and as it is said above Sanctum is undercosted in comparison with Coastal Tower… I think there isn’t anything new about this Alara lands but improve old printed lands… I need some really shocking new lands to play three color decks… Let’s see rare lands…
