Today we also saw the official spoiler for Vein Drinker. The art for this card was some of the first leaked and I always find it interesting as to what gets out vs what Wizards actually uses to promote.

My first thought, even when there was just art available, was that this creature resembles Mirri the Cursed from Planar Chaos. She seemed to have the same mood and posture. Now after seeing the ability I realize that I wasn’t far from the mark. Similar to Mirri you get to add a +1/+1 counter after dealing damage to a creature. Except that Vein Drinker can hit as hard as a Flame Javelin turn two and get bigger from there.

I wonder if Vein Drinker can find a place in my Necroskitter/Blowfly Infestation deck. This card would be a great late game bomb to start clearing the board and stealing creatures. If I can find a way to Vein Drinker Wither I’m even more in the money with that deck.

I see this card being another serious threat in the casual realm along side many other big dudes in Shards of Alara. It is kind of exciting to see the power explosion coming out of Shards. I was wondering how magic was going to refresh the Type 2 realm when tribal themes are so powerful. So I’ll leave you with that thought to chew on.

Nice art with no doubt, nice creature and nice ability…

It seems that Alara loves huge mana costs and huge creatures as well, though some smaller creatures look also nice (deft duelist or some of the knights, for example)…

May be after Shadowmoore block color theme, now Alara’e theme is “not only color but size do matters”…

Who knows…
